Instagram to shut down the IGTV app, increase investment in Reels

Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is shutting down its standalone app for IGTV app, the company announced on Monday. As per TechCrunch, the company will remove the app from app stores next month.

Instagram, in its blog post, said that the company is getting rid of the standalone IGTV app as “We will focus on having all video on the main Instagram app. We believe that this makes it easier for people to have all of these features and abilities in the main app, and are excited to continue to simplify and improve video in the main Instagram app over the coming months.” read the company’s blog.

Instagram had introduced a separate app for IGTV in 2018, intended to host longer vertical-format videos. Instagram merged its Feed Video and IGTV into Instagram Video last year, and the company says that it will continue to invest in Reels.

According to the company. Meanwhile, Instagram is working on a new “ad experience” which will allow creators on the service to earn ad revenue from Reels.
