With two fresh cases, Assam’s Covid-19 tally rises to 37

Guwahati, April 28 (IANS) After five days, two fresh coronavirus cases were found in Assam on Tuesday taking the state’s total to 37, though only nine of them are active, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Sarma, in a tweet, said that a person from Goalpara district in western Assam and was a secondary contact of an attendee of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi, has tested Covid-19 positive.

“… The number of Covid-19 patients in Assam now stands at 37. Active hospital cases 9.”

The minister earlier on Tuesday said in a tweet that a 16-year-old girl from Salmara Bongaingaon, also in western Assam), and a secondary contact of a Markaz attendee, has tested positive for coronavirus.

The teenager has become the youngest in Assam to test positive for coronavirus.

Assam’s total positive case of 37 exclude a 33-year-old trader from Nagaland’s Dimapur who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since April 12 after he tested positive for coronavirus.

Sarma also told the media that most of the patients undergoing treatments in various medical colleges and hospitals are expected to be released within few days.

Out of Assam’s 37 cases, 36 people directly or indirectly participated in the congregation last month while one patient, with a history of foreign travel, died in southern Assam.

Assam reported the last positive case on April 23, when a man from Bilasipara, Dhubri (western Assam), has tested Covid-19 positive. He has a history of being in touch with another patient, who was part of the Athgaon Majid congregation in Guwahati.

The first man, a 57-year-old ex-trooper of Border Security Force, to test positive for coronavirus in Assam on March 31, is still undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. He is a cancer patient too.

Assam has so far tested 8,117 samples in six laboratories.
