Turmoil in Howrah over burial of Covid-19 suspect

Kolkata, April 5 (IANS) A stretch close to the AJC Bose Botanic Garden, Shibpur, became volatile after locals clashed with the police over the burial of a Covid-19 suspect.

Police said some people were chased away as they were violating the lockdown and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.

According to some locals, the trouble started after people saw a corpse being taken to the Abdul Road burial ground by some people wearing personal protection equipment.

Panicky people came out of their houses and sought to know the reason for employing personnel with PPE for burying the deceased.

There were heated exchanges between the locals and those who had come to bury the body.

Soon after, the situation took an ugly turn as the locals became more restive prompting the authorities to send more police personnel.

A police officer, however, said the death certificate mentioned cardiac arrest as the cause of the man’s demise.

But the authorities decided to take all precautions for the burial as he had developed fever and respiratory distress before his death in the isolation ward of Satyabala ID Hospital on Friday morning.
