Superstar Rajinikanth to be Honoured with 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Superstar Rajinikanth to be conferred with the prestigious 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has confirmed the news.

“Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic,” Javadekar tweeted.

Superstar Rajinikanth began his acting career with a brief phase of portraying antagonistic characters in Tamil films. He made his film debut with K. Balachander’s 1975 Tamil drama Apoorva Raagangal. Director M Bhaskar’s Bairavi was the first Tamil film to showcase Rajinikanth as a solo hero. It was with this film that Thalaiva earned Superstar status in Kollywood. Some of his hit films includes Mullum Malarum, Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum, Ninaithale Inikikum and Aarilirunthu Arubathi Varai.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest film honor. It is presented by the Directorate of Film Festivals for the recipient’s contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award, named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who is revered as the father of Indian cinema, was instituted in 1969. The recipient receives a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
