SA women’s cricket team to resume training from Sunday

Pretoria, July 23 (IANS) The South Africa women’s cricket team is all set to return for a training camp on Sunday following a long gap put forward by coronavirus pandemic. The week-long camp is scheduled to help the players gear up for their proposed tour of England later this year.

The 24-member squad will regroup at the High Performance Center in Pretoria and this will be the first time the national team players will be together after crashing out of the semis at ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in March.

“The projected tour of England will have a heavy emphasis on the 50-over format as we start preparing for the ICC Women’s World Cup which is still scheduled to be played in New Zealand early next year,” Graeme Smith, CSA’s director of cricket, was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“We have been through a frustrating period with the team not able to build on the excellent form they showed at the Women’s T20 World Cup and next week’s camp represents an important new starting point.”

It was earlier reported that England, India and South Africa will be taking part in a tri-series. Team India was supposed to travel to England in August and following a 14-day quarantine period, would have taken part in the tri-series in September.

But as per reports, India’s participation in the series has been put on hold considering the rising coronavirus cases in the country.

Also, the ECB is reportedly planning to extend the series against South Africa in India’s potential absence and the revised schedule will be announced in the near future.
