Palghar lynching: SC rejects plea seeking case against policemen

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS) The Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea seeking registration of case against police officials who were present on the spot in the Palghar lynching matter, and also set up a judicial committee to monitor the trial of the accused on a monthly basis.

A bench headed by Ashok Bhushan said the top court had already taken cognizance of the Palghar incident, and there is no need to multiply petitions originated from the same issue.

The petitioner argued that the immediate trigger for filing this plea was Palghar mob lynching incident, and also raised other incidents of extra judicial killing in the country. The bench replied that it is not inclined to entertain the matter.

The petitioner had sought direction from the top court that judicial inquiry into the Palghar lynching case by a retired Supreme Court judge or retired Chief Justice of High Court into the killing of three innocent persons in Palghar.

The petitioner also argued that judicial committee set up by the apex court should be empowered to check cases of police excesses all over the country. This committee should also be empowered to monitor the trial of mob lynching in the recent past too, contended the petitioner.
