Instagram to introduce parental control features next year

Instagram will roll out new parental control features on its platform in March, the service’s head Adam Mosseri has announced in a blog post.

The announcement comes just after the “Instagram for kids” controversy and by the fact, the US Congress is going to hear him about it this week.

Among the tools includes the platform nudging teens towards different topics if they’ve been dwelling for too long, a Take A Break feature, and stopping users from tagging teens if they don’t follow them. The company is also introducing tools for parents to track how much time their teens spend on Instagram, set time limits, and explore a new educational hub. Teens will also soon have the ability to notify their parents when they report someone.

In this blog post, Mosseri said he would like to “clarify some of the work that we’ve been doing for a long time, and also lay out a few new things that we’ve been developing to meaningfully improve the experience on Instagram for teens, parents, and guardians.”

“I’m proud that young people use Instagram to connect with the people that matter to them most, to explore their interests, and to even explore their identities,” Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said on an Instagram post about the new safety features. “But none of that works unless people feel safe on Instagram.”

As per the Verge, although Instagram’s post contains a number of quotes from experts and research partners writing in support of the new features, Mosseri will have his work cut out if he wants to win over increasingly critical lawmakers in the US.
