Indonesia to support decision made by IOC on Olympics

Jakarta, March 23 (IANS) Indonesia has decided to support whatever decision the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and host country Japan take on the 2020 Olympic Games following pressures to delay the world’s biggest sports event, an Indonesian official said on Monday.

“Our stance is that we support the decision to be made by the IOC, because we believe that the IOC will put the safety of athletes on priority,” said Raja Sapta Oktohari, head of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI).

So far, he said, Indonesia is still ready to take part in the biggest international sports event, citing that preparations for the event persist, reports Xinhua news agency.

The 2020 Olympic Games is scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 9 in Tokyo, Japan, but some countries have stated that they could not participate in the games due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that the novel coronavirus spread pandemic and urged countries to take aggressive moves to contain the spread of the virus which has infected most of the countries in the world.

In Indonesia, the virus has dragged economic activities, killed 49 people and brought about 579 infection cases across the vast-archipelagic country.
