Communal tension in Bengal’s Hooghly, internet snapped

Kolkata, May 14 (IANS) Internet services were suspended in a large part of Kolkata’s adjoining Hooghly district following the communal clashes there.

Internet services were disrupted in areas like Bhadreshwar, Chandannagar, Haripal, Singur, Tarkeshwar, Sreerampur, Jangipara, Uttarpara, Dankuni, Chanditala and Rishra.

The clash took place at Telenipara in Bhadreshwar area with members of two groups pelting bricks and stones, hurling crude bombs and also looting some jewellery shops and grocery stores.

Local leaders of the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) locked horns over the incident with latter demanding Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s intervention into the incident.

“An order has been issued to suspend the internet service till May 18. The situation is now under control. We are keeping a watch. Hopefully the district administration will lift up the suspension following a thorough review of the situation very soon,” Hooghly District Magistrate Y. Ratnakar Rao told IANS.

Police sources said that as many as 36 people have been arrested so far for allegedly being involved in the clash.
