Melbourne, Sep 20 (IANS) Australia’s Victoria state, the worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, has reported the lowest number of fresh Covid-19 cases since June, according to health authorities.
On Saturday, Victoria reported 21 fresh cases, the lowest since June 24 when the state registered 20 infections, reports Xinhua news agency.
With this, the overall nationwide caseload stood at 26,885.
The state also reported seven new coronavirus fatalities on Saturday, taking the national death toll to 844.
“Six of today’s seven deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 757 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria,” said a statement from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services.
The Department also said that there are 433 active cases relating to aged care facilities and 123 active cases among healthcare workers.
With cases continuing to fall in Victoria, former vice president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Stephen Parnis has warned against complacency.
“But if we succumb to the complacency that could follow, then we will see outbreaks … It’s been incredibly difficult living through this second wave, with all of the restrictions that we have had to endure.
“But to do it a third time would, I think, break a lot of people,” he added.
