Walmart to hire 50,000 more workers in coronavirus-driven hiring spree
Walmart Inc. said it would employ 50,000 more staff at its stores, clubs and distribution centers to meet the demand for groceries and household items.
The retailer said when millions of Americans are losing their jobs amid unprecedented “stay-at-home” orders from state and local governments. In this situation, they are going to hire 50,000 workers per day.
The COVID-19 epidemic and it has badly impacted the global economy and business worldwide. So controlling the spread of this epidemic has forced companies to take drastic measures to save cash.
Walmart said it had worked with more than 70 companies that furloughed workers due to the pandemic to hire its 150,000 new employees, many of them are coming from the restaurant and hospitality industries.
The company also said 85% of the workers being hired are going into temporary or part-time roles.
As well as, separately, Walmart said it will now require its US staff to wear masks or other face coverings at work, making its face-covering policy mandatory from optional in line with public health guidance.
John Furner, President, and CEO, Walmart U.S. said in a memo, “this includes our stores, clubs, distribution and fulfillment centers as well as in our corporate offices.”
Besides that, according to the memo, the company is also extending its emergency leave policy through the end of May.
