‘Shakuntala Devi’ response thrills director Anu Menon

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IANS) Filmmaker Anu Menon is elated that her biopic on Shakuntala Devi, a mainstream film on mathematics, motherhood and a flawed woman, is being appreciated.

Menon is happy that her recently-released “Shakuntala Devi” has garnered positive response for its performances and story.

“I am thrilled and overwhelmed with the love that ‘Shakuntala Devi’ is receiving from consumers every day. What makes this appreciation even more special — is that we made a ‘mainstream’ film on Maths, motherhood and a gloriously flawed but unapologetic female protagonist, all subjects that aren’t often addressed in commercial Indian films,” Menon said.

“We have had families that have watched the movie together — loved it, had discussions after and gone to find out more about the one and only Human Computer,” she added.

The film is based on the life of the late Shakuntala Devi, who is widely revered as the human computer for her innate ability to make complex calculations within seconds. Vidya Balan essays the title role while Sanya Malhotra is seen playing the role of Shakuntala’s daughter Anupama, along with Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta in pivotal roles. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on July 31.

The screenplay is written by Menon along with Nayanika Mahtani, while the dialogues are penned by Ishita Moitra. “Shakuntala Devi” was planned for a theatrical release, but went the digital route due to the disruptions caused by the Covid crisis.
