Madras High Court Declaring The Amendment In Tamil Nadu Gaming Act As Unconstitutional

Dr. Subi Chaturvedi, Chief Corporate & Public Affairs Officer, Zupee issued a statement on the basis of the Tamil Nadu High Court’s judgment. The high court declares the amendment in the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act as unconstitutional.

DR. Subi Chaturvedi stated,

“We welcome the Madras High Court’s judgement and happy to note this as an important step towards ensuring regulatory continuity in the gaming industry. The growth and stability of what is emerging as a sunrise sector in India needs positive legislative support. It is important to remember that most of these gaming companies are homegrown start-ups and we need to do more to protect the interests of such companies and their investors. The next logical step would be formulate a progressive policy framework that is central and ubiquitous, preferably under a relevant ministry like the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology. This would ensure growth in the sector and would create lakhs of new jobs in the next few years. Apart from becoming a nearly 4-billion-dollar opportunity by 2025, the online gaming industry also holds the key to gamification of learning and skilling, which will be crucial to readying the workforce of the nation for the jobs of tomorrow.”

The amendment bans the playing of online betting games like rummy and poker with stakes. Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, who are on the first bench, passed the order on Tuesday.
