Kerala Police seeks custody of father who hit 54-day-old baby

Kochi, June 24 (IANS) The Kerala Police will seek the custody of 40-year-old Shaiju Thomas, who last week badly injured his 54-day-old daughter by hitting her on the head and flinging her on the bed, said a police official.

Speaking to IANS, the police official probing the incident, said presently the accused is in judicial custody.

“We will now move a petition to seek his custody for further probe,” said the official attached to the Angamaly Police station.

It was last Thursday that the baby girl with serious head injuries was admitted to a private medical college hospital.

Thomas, who hails from Kannur, was living with his Nepalese wife on rent in the Angamaly police station limits. After this incident, his wife said that once her child gets better she wishes to return to her country.

Thomas was said to be a drinker and had differences with his wife after she delivered the girl child.

It was only after a few rounds of questioning that the truth surfaced about the baby girl being brutally hit by her own father and not a case of an accidental fall from the bed.

The doctors treating her had several anxious moments while the baby was being treated. The baby had to undergo a major surgery and the doctors said that the danger period was over and the baby was a fighter. The baby continues to be in the hospital.
