Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended a webinar organized by Border Road Organization (BRO) on Atal Rohtang Tunnel on Monday.
During the inauguration, the minister appreciated BRO engineers’ efforts for building the longest highway tunnel in the world- ‘Atal Tunnel, despite the Covid restrictions and other challenges.
He took the Seri Nalla example, a fault zone, which presented serious challenges to even foreign engineers. He said, “But our engineers succeeded in overcoming the Seri Nalla challenge.”
Praising the Atmanirbhar Bharat, he added, “we were able to quickly mobilize our resources to produce PPE kits, masks, sanitizers, etc. not only for our domestic requirements but also for supplying to other countries”.
The Atal Tunnel project was first introduced in June 2000 by our former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The tunnel was built by the Border Roads Organisation. It is a 9.2 km long tunnel situated above an altitude of 3,000 meters that was opened on 3 October 2020.
