Coronavirus now spreads in Indore jail

Indore, April 20 (IANS) Indore’s corona woes refuse to go. Four more prisoners tested positive for the virus in the central jail taking the total number of such cases to six by Monday evening.

“Four prisoners, suspected of having contracted the dreaded disease on April 17, were admitted in the chest ward of government MY hospital. They tested positive on Monday,” Jail Superintendent, Rakesh Kumar Bhangre said.

They are aged between 28-34 years.

Jails packed way beyond capacity have added to the problem of handling contagious diseases.

In the Indore jail, there are 2,200 inmates against the capacity of 1,230 prisoners. The prison barracks are divided into seven zones for ensuring social distancing among them. They were also provided with masks.

Bhangare said all other prisoners who encountered them are being shifted to a separate temporary jail where a medical team will keep a watch on their health.

The barracks are also sanitized with the help of Athe municipal corporation, he added.
