Bharat Bandh: No significant impact in Gurugram, Asha workers extend support

Gurugram, Sep 25 (IANS) Though farmers in other parts of Haryana registered their protest against the passage of the agriculture Bills, no significant impact was noticed in Gurugram district. However, Asha and Anganwadi workers and members of trade unions extended their support to the ‘Bharat Bandh.

Gurugram has very few farmers and even among them, the Bharat Bandh evoked an extremely lukewarm response.

No farmers’ union appeared to oppose the agriculture Bills in the district.

Only scattered protests and demonstrations were reported from places in and around the area.

Reportedly, in Rewari, about 50 people gathered in the grain market and protested against the Bills and submitted a memorandum to the President through the Deputy Commissioner.

Meanwhile in Gurugram, Asha workers, Anganwadi workers and trade unions extended their support to the Bharat Bandh but no one from farmers’ union came forward to raise their voice against the Bills.

Some Asha and Anganwadi workers and trade unionists were seen taking out marches in support of farmers.

Asha workers and others protested in the Sadar Bazar area of the district.

“The absence of farmers against these Bills in South Haryana does not mean that they are not against them. Some people are in opposition and some are supporting the Bills,” said a farmer leader requesting anonymity.

“Actually, there is no organised union of farmers in South Haryana, due to which the farmers are not united here,” the leader said.

“Another reason is that most of the MLAs in South Haryana belong to the BJP and there is a BJP government in the state,” he said.

“There has always been Jat and non-Jat politics in Haryana, so even the people of South Haryana are not particularly opposed to the non-Jat CM government,” he added.

Apart from this, Gurugram and Faridabad in South Haryana are known as industrial districts, while Bawal in Rewari district is also an industrial area. In these three districts, a large number of farmers’ land was purchased by builders for commercial and residential purposes. So farming in these districts has been reduced.

On the other hand, farmer leader Maan Singh said that he supports these Bills, so there are no protests.

“In South Haryana the biggest problem is water, so the farmers here are doing traditional farming and do not do too much experimentation, so there is not much opposition,” Singh added.

Labourers here support the farmers.

“We are taking part in the march because being an industrial city, there are many labourers who are the sons of farmers, hence we are in support of farmers’ agitation,” said Janghu, a labourer.
