Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi to hit theaters on January 6, 2022

Alia Bhatt`s much-awaited film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is all set to release in theatres on January 6, 2022. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film stars Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in the lead roles.

Announcing the release date of the film along with a new poster, Alia Bhatt took to Twitter and wrote, “Bringing to you a part of my heart & soul, #GangubaiKathiawadi releasing in cinemas near you on 6th January, 2022 (sic).”

Earlier, the film was supposed to release on July 30, 2021, but had to be pushed back due to the second wave of the pandemic.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is said to be a woman who came to Mumbai from Gujarat with her partner, but was betrayed, sold off, and pushed into prostitution. Kathiawadi, in the middle of the last century, built ties with many underworld criminals and got a hold over certain portions of South Mumbai. She became the owner of a brothel and is said to have worked for the upliftment of women and orphans in the red light area of Mumbai’s Kamathipura.

Apart from Gangubai Kathiawadi, the actress has a series of projects lined up. She will be seen in SS Rajamouli’s RRR, Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani with Ranveer Singh and Darlings. Alia will also be seen on-screen with her boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor for the first time in Ayan Mukerji’s fantasy drama Brahmastra. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna Akkineni and Mouni Roy.
