83 Percent of Mumbai gated communities to ramp up green infra within 3 years: MyGate Survey

Mumbai, India: A survey by MyGate, which indicates that 83% of gated communities in Mumbai are planning to ramp up their green infrastructure facilities in the next three years MyGate, the largest community management app in India, conducted a survey of resident welfare associations (RWAs) to understand the pulse of gated communities towards electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure facilities, solar power, and rainwater harvesting. Nearly 800 RWAs participated in the survey out of which and 160 were from Mumbai. Of the three, EVs are clearly a priority area, with solar not far behind; on the other hand, nearly one in three communities had already set up rainwater harvesting facilities.

As per the findings, a large majority (78%) of gated communities in Mumbai are planning to install EV charging infrastructure within the next 0-3 years. Of these 57% are aiming to set up the facility within the next 12 months and 21% plan to do so in 1-3 years.

The enthusiasm is not restricted to EV charging infrastructure. Solar infrastructure is also on the minds of RWAs, with 71% of respondents indicating that they intend on installing solar energy infrastructure within three years. However, unlike with EV charging, a greater proportion of communities are looking at a 0-12 month timeline (51%), rather than a 1-3 year timeline (20%), just 9% of communities had already invested in solar power infrastructure.

There also remains interested in setting up rainwater harvesting facilities in gated communities, though 31% of communities had already set this up. Nonetheless, 32% of communities are planning investment in rainwater harvesting in the next 12 months, with 18% and 19% indicating that they would get it done in 1-3 years and 3-5 years, respectively.

Commenting on the insights, Mr. Abhishek Kumar, COO & Co-founder, MyGate said, “It is encouraging to learn of the scale at which gated communities are looking to invest in and adopt green infrastructure. At MyGate, we would be glad to use our expertise and create a bridge or assist communities to achieve their green goals, as we have already begun doing in the EV space.”

Respondents to the survey represent gated communities across Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune, and overall results show that the eagerness to go green is a national phenomenon. 73.3% of gated communities across the country expressed an intent to install one of the three major green infrastructure facilities in the near term (0-3 years). 0.6% of the communities surveyed had all three installed.

Across India, 75.4% of gated communities are looking to install EV charging units within the next three years. Similarly, the number of respondents who are keen on setting up solar energy in the next three years is also as high as 75.2%. While close to 53% have already implemented rainwater harvesting it is still a key line item when it comes to infrastructure upgradation. Around 38.9% of gated communities are planning to invest in setting up rainwater harvesting within the next three years. While Mumbai (78% of gated communities) is leading with regard to the installation of EV infrastructure facilities in the next three years, it is Pune (76.3%) that tops the charts when it comes to solar infrastructure.
